Canvas sizes sold in inches convert to centimeters by multiplying each dimension by 2.54. An 8×10 inch canvas is exactly 20.32×25.4 cm, for example, while a 24×36 inch canvas is 60.96×91.44 cm. Retail charts commonly round those values to one decimal place.

Use the chart below for quick comparisons. Dimensions are written width × height; rotate the canvas to change orientation without changing its area or aspect ratio.

How to convert canvas inches to centimeters

One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters. Convert the width and height separately:

  1. Multiply the width in inches by 2.54.
  2. Multiply the height in inches by 2.54.
  3. Keep the same width × height order.
  4. Round only the displayed result, not the values used in later calculations.

For a 16×20 inch canvas:

  • Width: 16 × 2.54 = 40.64 cm
  • Height: 20 × 2.54 = 50.8 cm
  • Rounded retail-style label: 40.6×50.8 cm

To convert centimeters back to inches, divide each measurement by 2.54. The Canvas Size Converter performs both conversions and also calculates millimeters and print pixels.

Why converted sizes have decimals

Many familiar canvas labels originated in inches. Multiplying whole inches by 2.54 naturally produces decimals: 18 inches becomes 45.72 cm and 24 inches becomes 60.96 cm.

A retailer may display the same 18×24 inch canvas as 45.7×61 cm, 46×61 cm, or simply 18×24 inches. Those labels can describe approximately the same nominal format, but the manufacturer’s actual product dimensions should control framing, replacement, and shipping decisions.

Inch canvases and metric canvases are not always identical

A converted inch size is not necessarily the same product as a canvas manufactured to a round metric specification.

  • 16×20 inches converts to 40.64×50.8 cm.
  • A canvas made as 40×50 cm is slightly smaller and has a 4:5 ratio.
  • 24×30 inches converts to 60.96×76.2 cm.
  • A canvas made as 60×80 cm is longer and has a 3:4 ratio.

The differences are small enough to confuse product searches but large enough to matter for a fitted frame. Do not substitute a nearby metric label without checking all three outer measurements: width, height, and depth.

Common metric canvas sizes

Artists outside inch-based markets may also encounter canvases made to round metric dimensions, including:

  • 20×20 cm: compact square study
  • 20×30 cm: small 2:3 rectangle
  • 30×40 cm: medium 3:4 rectangle
  • 40×50 cm: medium 4:5 rectangle
  • 50×70 cm: larger 5:7 rectangle
  • 60×80 cm: large 3:4 rectangle
  • 70×100 cm: oversized 7:10 rectangle

Availability varies by manufacturer and region. These are commonly encountered metric formats, not a universal inventory standard.

Choose the aspect ratio before the physical size

Centimeters and inches describe physical length; the aspect ratio describes shape. Converting units never changes the ratio.

  • 4:5: 8×10, 16×20, and 24×30 inches
  • 3:4: 9×12, 12×16, 18×24, 30×40, and 36×48 inches
  • 2:3: 4×6, 12×18, 20×30, and 24×36 inches
  • 1:1: equal width and height, such as 20×20 or 40×40 cm

If a reference image is 4:5, it can scale from 8×10 to 16×20 without changing shape. Moving it to a 3:4 canvas requires cropping or added image area. Use the Canvas Aspect Ratio Calculator to reduce dimensions and estimate the crop.

Canvas size categories in centimeters

Size labels are relative, but these working groups help when comparing supplies:

Small canvases

Roughly 10×15 through 20×25 cm. These formats suit studies, gifts, small portraits, and grouped wall arrangements. Examples include 4×6, 5×7, and 8×10 inches.

Medium canvases

Roughly 23×30 through 41×51 cm. These sizes provide more working room while remaining manageable for many desks, easels, and ready-made frames. Examples include 9×12, 11×14, 12×16, and 16×20 inches.

Large canvases

Roughly 46×61 through 76×102 cm. Material use, viewing distance, framing, storage, and transport become more significant. Compare 18×24 through 36×48 in the large canvas size guide.

Which canvas size should you choose?

Choose the composition’s shape first, then pick the physical dimensions:

  • Quick studies and gifts: 12.7×17.8 cm or 20.3×25.4 cm
  • Detailed portraits: 27.9×35.6 cm or 40.6×50.8 cm
  • Half-length figures and stronger wall presence: 45.7×61 cm or 61×76.2 cm
  • Wide landscapes: 61×91.4 cm in landscape orientation
  • Room-defining work: 76.2×101.6 cm or 91.4×121.9 cm

These are practical starting points rather than rules. Subject detail, working style, viewing distance, and the actual display space should decide the final size.

Buying and framing checks

Before ordering a canvas or frame:

  • Confirm whether the listing uses inches, exact centimeters, or rounded centimeters.
  • Check whether dimensions refer to the canvas face or the finished frame.
  • Record canvas depth separately from width and height.
  • Verify the manufacturer’s stated tolerance and actual outer dimensions.
  • Match the aspect ratio to the reference before choosing a larger format.
  • Use exact measurements—not a rounded product label—for a fitted frame.

The guide on how to measure a canvas explains the correct edge-to-edge method for width, height, depth, and framed artwork.
