Standard painting sizes range from compact 4×6 and 5×7-inch studies to 30×40 and 36×48-inch statement canvases. The most widely useful middle sizes are 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, and 18×24 inches. Choose the aspect ratio that fits the composition first, then select a physical size that suits the detail, wall, materials, framing, and transport.

A standard size is a nominal format commonly stocked by canvas and frame manufacturers. It is not a universal manufacturing rule. The actual outside dimensions and depth can vary slightly with stretcher construction, wrapping, priming, and brand.

Common formats matter because they are easier to source, replace, frame, and repeat in a series. Custom dimensions can better fit a composition or wall, but often require custom stretchers and framing.

Small painting sizes

4×6, 5×7, and 6×8 inches

These formats suit thumbnails, color studies, gifts, small still lifes, and quick plein-air work. They use less paint and storage space, but the subject must remain simple enough to read at close scale.

8×10 inches

An 8×10 canvas is 20.3×25.4 cm with a 4:5 ratio. It is a common starting size for portraits, small landscapes, studies, and grouped wall arrangements. A 16×20 canvas is an exact 4:5 enlargement with four times the face area.

Medium painting sizes

9×12 and 11×14 inches

A 9×12 canvas uses a 3:4 ratio and remains easy to carry. An 11×14 canvas provides about 93 percent more face area than 8×10 and has its own 11:14 ratio. Both work for portraits, studies, demonstrations, and modest wall pieces.

12×16 and 16×20 inches

A 12×16 canvas belongs to the 3:4 family. A 16×20 canvas belongs to the 4:5 family and gives a portrait or still life enough room for controlled detail without the handling demands of a large statement canvas.

18×24 inches

An 18×24 canvas is 45.7×61 cm, exactly three square feet, and uses a 3:4 ratio. It works for half-length portraits, larger landscapes, teaching demonstrations, and paintings meant to read from farther away.

Large painting sizes

24×30 and 24×36 inches

A 24×30 canvas uses a compact 4:5 ratio. A 24×36 canvas uses a longer 2:3 ratio. Choose 24×30 for a substantial portrait or still life; choose 24×36 when a full figure, broad landscape, or photo-based composition needs more length.

30×40 and 36×48 inches

A 30×40 canvas is 76.2×101.6 cm with 8.33 square feet of face area. A 36×48 canvas covers 12 square feet. Both require deliberate planning for easel capacity, paint, framing, storage, door clearance, transportation, and viewing distance.

Choose the ratio before the dimensions

Two canvases can differ in size while sharing the same shape:

• 4:5: 8×10, 16×20, and 24×30
• 3:4: 9×12, 12×16, 18×24, 30×40, and 36×48
• 2:3: 4×6, 12×18, 20×30, and 24×36
• 1:1: 8×8, 12×12, 16×16, and 24×24
• 11:14: 11×14 and 22×28

Choose a painting size by subject

Portraits

Landscapes

Still lifes

Abstract and geometric work

Square formats provide a neutral directional field. Rectangles introduce a stronger horizontal or vertical movement. Test several proportions with thumbnail sketches rather than choosing only by what is in stock.

Account for area, not only edge length

Material use grows with surface area. A 16×20 canvas has four times the face area of an 8×10 even though each edge is only twice as long. A 30×40 canvas has nearly three times the area of 18×24.

Check the frame, wall, and transport route

Canvas labels describe the face, not the final framed outside size. Measure stretcher depth, frame rabbet, mat or liner width, and total outside dimensions separately.

3. Check doors, stairs, elevators, and vehicle openings.
4. Confirm the easel and storage space.
