To calculate a canvas size in pixels, multiply each dimension in inches by the intended print resolution in pixels per inch (PPI). An 8×10-inch canvas at 300 PPI needs a 2400×3000-pixel image for the front face because 8 × 300 = 2400 and 10 × 300 = 3000.

Pixel-to-print formulas

There are two useful calculations:

  • Required pixels = print size in inches × PPI
  • Maximum print size in inches = available pixels ÷ PPI

Calculate width and height separately. A 4000×6000-pixel image printed at 300 PPI works out to approximately 13.3×20 inches. At 240 PPI, the same file works out to approximately 16.7×25 inches without adding or removing pixels.

Changing the resolution field alone does not create new image detail. Adobe explains that the total image data stays constant unless the image is resampled; without resampling, increasing the PPI reduces the physical print dimensions and decreasing it enlarges them.

The file and canvas must also have compatible aspect ratios. A 4000×6000 file has a 2:3 ratio, so it fits a 24×36 canvas without ratio cropping but not a 16×20 canvas, which uses 4:5.

Is 300 PPI always required?

No single PPI value is correct for every canvas print. 300 PPI is a useful high-detail target, especially for smaller work viewed close up, but the print process, source image, subject detail, canvas texture, and viewing distance all affect the result.

Adobe describes 300 PPI as an industry-standard target for high-quality prints and notes that lower resolutions may still work for large-format images viewed from farther away. Its printer-resolution guidance also says that image PPI and printer DPI are different measurements and recommends checking the output device documentation or print provider’s requirements.

Use these three columns as planning levels:

  • 300 PPI: a conservative high-detail target for close viewing
  • 240 PPI: a strong intermediate planning value
  • 150 PPI: a lower-resolution reference often considered for larger work or longer viewing distances

They are comparison points, not quality guarantees. Always follow the provider’s current specification when it differs.

PPI versus DPI

PPI describes how many image pixels are assigned to each inch of the printed image. It connects the file’s pixel dimensions to its physical print dimensions.

DPI describes the printer’s output dots. A printer may use multiple ink dots to reproduce one image pixel, so a printer advertised at a high DPI does not require an image with the same numerical PPI.

For file preparation, use the required image PPI. For hardware capability, ink placement, and driver settings, use printer DPI. Do not substitute one number for the other.

Match the aspect ratio before resizing

Pixel count cannot solve a shape mismatch. The file’s width-to-height ratio must match the canvas ratio or the image must be cropped, extended, or printed with borders.

  • 4:5 canvas: 8×10, 16×20, and 24×30
  • 3:4 canvas: 9×12, 12×16, 18×24, and 30×40
  • 2:3 canvas: 4×6, 12×18, 20×30, and 24×36
  • 11:14 canvas: 11×14

Add bleed for a gallery wrap

The chart gives face dimensions. A gallery wrap uses additional image area around the edges so the print can continue over the stretcher bars and onto the back.

If a provider asks for 2 inches of image on every edge, add 4 inches to both the face width and face height before multiplying by PPI. A 16×20 face would therefore need a 20×24-inch image area:

  • At 150 PPI: 3000×3600 pixels
  • At 240 PPI: 4800×5760 pixels
  • At 300 PPI: 6000×7200 pixels

A reliable file-preparation workflow

  1. Choose the finished canvas face size.
  2. Confirm the print provider’s required PPI, bleed, color space, file type, and maximum upload size.
  3. Match or crop the image to the canvas aspect ratio.
  4. Add the required border or wrap area.
  5. Calculate the final pixel dimensions after the extra area is included.
  6. Inspect the image at 100% for focus, compression artifacts, and unwanted interpolation.
  7. Export a separate print copy so the original remains unchanged.

How many pixels is an 8×10 canvas?

An 8×10-inch canvas face is 2400×3000 pixels at 300 PPI, 1920×2400 pixels at 240 PPI, or 1200×1500 pixels at 150 PPI. Add separate bleed pixels if the printer requires them.

How many pixels is a 16×20 canvas?

What size can I print a 3000×4000 image?

Open this 3000×4000-pixel example in the converter. Without resampling, it produces 10×13.3 inches at 300 PPI, 12.5×16.7 inches at 240 PPI, or 20×26.7 inches at 150 PPI. Crop or choose a custom canvas because 3:4 does not exactly match every standard size.

Does changing 72 PPI to 300 PPI improve the image?

Not by itself. If resampling is off, changing the PPI changes the calculated physical print size but preserves the same pixels. Resampling can add pixels, but it cannot recreate all detail that was absent from the source.

Should I use PPI or DPI for a canvas file?

Use PPI to calculate the image file’s required pixel dimensions. DPI describes printer output dots. Follow the print provider’s image-resolution specification rather than matching the printer’s advertised DPI.
